BIBA members are a diverse, independent
mix. Members range from coffee shop owners to network
programmers, landscapers to accountants, and any number
of entrepreneurs who promote their own unique brand
of business. With this blend of independence BIBA tends
to create an opportunity for exciting possibilities.
Primarily, BIBA businesses are independently
owned and based within the community where they live.
Whereas 51% of the decisions are based within Boulder
County these owners live within the neighborhoods they
work. Also, they have created a unique "brand"
of business that cannot be found in chain stores or
formula businesses.

It's important to differentiate
a BIBA member from other "locally owned" businesses.
A BIBA member will have joined BIBA to support the brand
recognition of something larger than itself, and to
cooperate within the community in order to promote an
alliance of group purchasing, marketing and social integration.
The benefit of promoting oneself through an independent
business directory, THE BIBA
GUIDE is often times the easiest advertisement a
business can make. Some "locally-owned" businesses
are franchises which receive the benefit of name recognition
and sometimes, financial support and administrative
help.
Your local basic chain, could in
theory be considered "locally owned," but
still is not independently owned. The profits, expenses,
marketing, and other needs of the business will be removed
from the community. The distinction is important when
you recognize that the character of a community is altered
by the infusion of locally owned franchises as much
as by chain stores that command a higher volume of purchasing
and national brand recognition.
BIBA has
had such success in raising public awareness of the
value of "locally owned" business that some
marketers are now calling a business locally owned even
when its owners live outside of Boulder County or simply
operate within the state of Colorado. The sales of such
businesses are taxed outside of Boulder County, negating
any benefit consumers provide by keeping their dollars
within the community.
